Analysis of aurora and airglow over Svalbard in 2003-2006

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
Spectrographic measurements of atmospheric emissions provide important information on the conditions in the upper atmosphere and Earth surroundings. Observations in the polar region are of particular interest, since aurora borealis occuring there is a manifestation
of the processes in the magnetosphere of the Earth.

A high resolution spectrograph has been operated on the arctic island of Svalbard, Norway during winters of 2003/6, recording aurorally produced spectra of molecular and atomic oxygen, hydroxil airglow emissions and the hydrogen line excited by proton aurora. The aim of the project is to analyse the data in order to get statistical patterns of the auroral precipitation and mesospheric conditions, and investigate possible relations between them.

The work involves visit(s) to Svalbard, to participate in observations during the winter of 2006/7, and discuss the results with our collaborators at UNIS.

Experience with data processing and analysis are recommended. Basic knowledge of space physics is useful.
