Non-PSNR optimized video coding for H.264

Thesis description
The goal with this thesis is to study and implement approaches to improve the subjective visual quality of H.264 encoded video. This work includes topics as filtering, video coding and human visual perception. The encoded video can be characterized by Peak-Signal-to-Noise-Ratio (PSNR) and bit rate. PSNR describes the objective similarity between the encoded video and the original uncoded video. The bit rate is the number of bits required to represent the encoded video per second. PSNR decreases with decreasing bit rate. However, variation in subjective visual quality does not necessarily correspond to variation in PSNR especially for video encoded at low bit rates. Synthetic video can potentially reduce the bit rate at the cost of reduced PSNR but at hopefully improved subjective visual quality. This thesis aims to investigate if the perceived quality of an encoded video can be improved by exploiting non-PSNR optimization and generation of synthetic video. The work will be done on top of existing H.264 encoder/decoder software (C code) developed at Ericsson Research.
Qualifications
We are looking for a bright M.Sc student with interest and knowledge in algorithm design. Good programming skills in C or the ability to learn it fast is also a requirement.

Visual Technology is part of the department of Multimedia Technology at Ericsson Research. The unit works with video coding, video quality, multimedia telephony, mobile TV and graphics. In these areas the unit is active in standardization and implementations for products. The thesis work will be done at the Visual Technology section of Multimedia Technologies at Ericsson Research in Kista, Torshamnsgatan 23.
