Evaluation of a New Method for Computer Tomography for Children

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
Three dimensional X-ray imaging is a standard diagnostic procedure all over the world with increasing number of patients every year and often the only alternative for fast and accurate diagnostic information. A risk with these examinations is the radiation dose since children at young age are very sensitive compared to adults and in recent reports as many as 1 000 radiation induced deaths in cancer has been reported on a yearly basis for children only in the USA.

We believe that the radition dose can be decreased while maintaining or improving the image quality by using novel techniques in detector technology and x-ray optics recently enabled by the developments in nano-manufacturing. These ideas needs optimization and evaluation to construct the first prototypes and this is the scope of this diploma work. The major tool will be calculations and computer simulations adjusting existing computer code and models to fit our purpose.

The major work will be carried out at Duke University, North Carolina, USA at the Advanced Imaging Laboratories under supervision of its director Dr Ehsan Samei. The work is part of a collaboration between Kungl Tekniska Högskolan (KTH) and Duke where the hardware expertise is at KTH while Duke has significant experience in dose calcualtions and simulations. Both groups have significant international recognition in this area of medical imaging research and Duke is one of the best Universities in this area.

We have in the past had a high success rate in turning reasearch ideas into reality in the hospitals and significant export for Swedish industry.
