Miniaturisation of a spacecraft magnetometer using multichip module technique

The objective of the suggested project is to prepare a design for implementation of an electronic circuit in multichip module (MCM) technology. The technology can be considered as the next generation of electronic component mounting. In MCM designs the mounting is done on a silicon substrate, in which the connectors and passive components are implemented using standard thin film technology. Integrated components are mounted as naked chips directly onto silicon.

KTH and Uppsala University work on developing a set of miniaturized scientific instruments for small spacecraft. One of the instruments in the package is a fluxgate magnetometer, which is prototyped and tested in the common surface mounted printed circuit board solution. The electronic design has now to be transferred to the MCM technology.

During the M.Sc. project you will learn software for designing multilayer thin film coatings, get familiar with the electronics design and prepare a layout for implementation in the MCM technology. Depending on the progress, some stages of implementation in the clean room may be included as well. The work is in collaboration with Uppsala University, so you will share your time between KTH and Uppsala university.
