Diploma Work – Synthesis of rapid curing silicone materials for use in wound healing

Mölnlycke Health Care is a world leading manufacturer of single-use surgical and wound care products and services for the professional health care sector.

Mölnlycke Safetac technology is based on soft silicones that provide secure but gentle adhesion to skin, with increased comfort to patients and easy removal of the dressings without damaging the skin.

The goal of this 20p diploma work is to develop the next generation biocompatible silicones that undergo fast curing for direct use on the skin. The project is divided into 5 subprojects:

• Identify chemistries that are compatible with silicone materials and that will allow fast curing.
• Purchase a library of commercially available silicones that fulfill the requirements for chemical modifications.
• Chemically tailor the library of silicones with active groups that will undergo crosslinking.
• Cure the polymers into films using both thermal as well as UV initiation strategies
• Characterize the films by IR, NMR, RAMAN, toxicity tests, adhesion etc.

We are looking for an ambitious student who is interested in both synthetic organic and polymer chemistry. The candidate will work in the Division of Coating Technology at Fibre and Polymer Technology, KTH. There will also be opportunities to visit the Mölnlycke Health Care research and development centre in Gothenburg.
