Ionospheric modification by powerful RF waves

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
The ionosphere of the Earth is the ionized layer of the upper atmosphere (at 60-1000 km altitude). The presence of this layer is crucial for radiocommunication, since electromagnetic waves with frequencies below the critical
frequency are reflected down to the earth. Radiowaves can also be used to probe the properties of the ionosphere and investigate the plasma physical processes in it.

Experiments with so called ionospheric modification (or heating) are a powerful method to address a number of questions in plasma physics. In such experiments, high
intensity radio waves are transmitted into the ionosphere,
where they can be absorbed and initiate a number of plasma processes. These can be further studied with a number of different scientific instruments, such as for example ionospheric radars.

In autumn 2006 such experiments were carried out at the
Tromsö EISCAT site by our team. In these experiments
strongly enhanced electron temperatures were observed
in the ionosphere during transmission of the X-mode
radiowaves. The purpose of the M.Sc. project is to analyse, model and interpret these observations, in order to understand the processes occurring during the absorption of X-mode radiowaves.
