Measurement and analysis of light absorption in GaN-based material and its use in detectors and modulators

Background

Gallium nitride and its associated alloys have become established as important wide band gap materials for optoelectronic devices. They are widely exploited for the production of light emitting diodes and laser diodes. However, they are also highly suited for the production of detectors and modulators in the UV-blue wavelength region.

Based on its many-year experience in GaN technology and detector/modulator design, Acreo AB is now developing the necessary designs and technologies for the production of detectors and modulators for the UV-blue wavelength region. This Master Thesis Work will contribute to the development effort through the study of light absorption in selected structures and the coupling of this to detector and modulator response.

Tasks

The work will involve the following tasks, with special emphasis on the middle three -

• Literature study, in order to get a feel for the technology involved
• Experimental measurement of light absorption in selected structures
• Setting up of measurement equipment for detectors
• Experimental measurement of detection with selected structures
• Written report


Required background

Knowledge of semiconductor physics and optical measurement technology.
