RF front end for atmospheric radar

EISLAB at Luleå University of Technology is one partner in the development of a large distributed phased array antenna for the EISCAT atmospheric VHF radar (www.eiscat.se). The antenna will operate in the frequency range of 200 – 250 MHz with very high demands on noise, linearity, and time synchronization between antenna elements.

This master’s thesis project will develop a prototype of the analog front end for the antenna. The design will be built using discrete components such as low noise amplifiers (LNA) and surface acoustic wave (SAW) filters. Key specifications include >72 dB SFDR and SNR, overall front end gain of around 60 dB and 60 dB out-of band rejection. Important assets in the design work will be the microelectronics lab and the EMC shielded chamber lab available at EISLAB. The work will be performed in very close cooperation with EISLAB staff and Ph.D. students active in the project, as well as the EISCAT scientific association in Kiruna. The work is suitable for one or two students with a background in electrical engineering, and previous RF knowledge is an advantage.
