Refining of pulp fibres in different ionic forms

In papermaking, refining of pulp fibres is one of the most important process operations since it determines the final properties of the paper sheet to a large extent.
Previous refining studies have shown that it is possible to reduce the energy consumption during refining with 50% by altering the ion form of the fibres. Ion exchange of the charged groups within the fibres into sodium form reduces the energy demand with 50%. The reduction can not merely be explained by increased initial swelling.
In this work the task would be to explain through various experiments why fibres in sodium form respond better than fibres in calcium form.
