Improve refining through understanding of the connection between fibre network strength and refining response (Aw)

In papermaking refining of pulp fibres is one of the most important process operations since it determines the final properties of the paper sheet to a large extent. During refining mechanical energy is transferred to the fibers which alter the fibre structure; internal and external defibrillation, fibre shortening and creation of fines occur during refining. Low consistency refining is done at a pulp consistency of approximately 3% and the refining action can be considered as treatment of fibre flocs.
The objective in this work is to correlate the refining results to the fibre network strength of the fibre suspension. Different raw materials will be investigated and the refining behaviour will be linked to the rhelogical properties of the fibre suspension. Various fibres and different de-flocculation and flocculation agents will be studied.
