Ultra low frequency pulsations in the nightside magnetosphere

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
Ultra low frequency (ULF) pulsations are a prominent feature in the terrestrial magnetosphere. These pulsations are typically standing waves along the geomagnetic field lines. Thus their wavelengths are comparable to the lengths of the field lines (i.e. several Earth radii) and the wave periods range from minutes up to tens of minutes.

ULF pulsations are with advantage studied in situ with satellites and this thesis project is aimed at gathering a number of satellite observations and then study a number of different properties of these waves such as frequency, wave number, spatial and temporal characteristics and possibly also their excitation mechanism (or mechanisms).

The analysis will mainly be carried out with data from the Cluster spacecraft. They where launched in late 2000 in an elliptical polar orbit around the Earth and now a wealth of data exist that are well suited for the detection and analysis of ULF waves. The primary focus will be on waves occurring in the nightside magnetosphere. This has to date not been studied in detail with the Cluster satellites.

Experience using MATLAB and a basic knowledge in plasma physics are recommended.
