Evaluation of Particle Image Velocimetry for measurements of turbulent fibre suspension flows

Turbulence of fibre suspensions are an important field of study which is of industrial interest. One application field is papermaking, where the turbulence in the paper machine has a direct influence on the quality of the final product.
The present project is a part of a larger effort to understand and predict turbulent flow of fibre suspensions. One measurement technique which can be used for such studies is Particle Image Velocimetry, PIV. THe PIV technique is image based, why it has to be possible to have sufficient optical access to the region under study. The proposed project aims at:
-determining to what extent PIV is a versatile technique for the study of fibre suspensions
-study the fibre concentration and test section size which limits the usage of the technique
The candidate should have a background in fluid mechanics and an interest for experimental techniques.
