Correction for respiratory gating for improved PET imaging and optimized radiation planning

Positron Emission Imaging (PET) and Computed Tomgraphic (CT) images suffer from the patients respiratory motion artifacts. These artifacts results to loss of spatial resolution requiring enlarged planning tumor volume (PTV) in the dose planning stage and choice of radiation field.

Within a pan-European multi package project, BioCare, we have started to design and construct an improved PET detector with enhanced resolution and sensitivity. We are also interested to correct, according to a specific schema, using a previously constructed laser scanner, for the respiratory motion.

This specific ¿x-jobb¿ is aimed in tailoring a schema for correction of the respiratory motion, in CT as well as PET images using the information obtained from fast CT:s and list mode PET. The work is performed at Karolinska Institute, dept. of medical radiation physics in Stockhom. In order to perform this task, applicant has to have a good understanding of image processing such as image segmentation and transformation. Since the work is very much software oriented, you are expected to be fluent in programming, preferably an OO- language as well as high level tools such as MatLab.
