Stability and Sensitivity Analysis of Turbulent Separated Boundary-layer Flows

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
Turbulent boundary layers under strong adverse pressure gradients are
of interest in many applications as in diffusers and turbo machines. Strong adverse pressure gradients may cause separation limiting the performance due to sever pressure losses. Therefore flow control may be desired to eliminate or reduce the size of the separation bubble. One of the interesting control approaches is to use periodic excitation to eliminate the separation.

The objective of the work is to analyse the stability characteristics and sensitivity of a turbulent separated boundary-layer to find the most efficient control frequency.

The work includes implementation of extra terms in our stability code
to account for the effects of turbulence quantities on disturbance
growth. The adjoint equations which give the sensitivity of
disturbance growth to small modification of the flow field will also
be modified due to these new terms. These codes are then applied to
analyse a separated boundary layer which has been calculated by Direct
Numerical Simulation (DNS).

The work will be done at FOI (in Bromma) in close collaboration with Dept. of Mechanics at KTH.
