Direct obsevation of molten copper meniscus in strip casting mould during casting (gh)
Free surface fluctuaions of molten copper in the mould of a strip caster are considered to have a significant effect on the surface quality of the cast. Previous research works [1,2] comfirmed that the meniscus fluctuates at the same period and phase as those of the mould oscillation.
Stabilization of the surface quality of continuously cast at a fixed level is important for the improvment of product qualities.
To find out the relationship between the surface wave motion of molten copper near the mould wall during casting and mould oscillation, in relation to different inlet system, the meniscus of copper molten in the mould is going to directly be obseved through a quartz glass window mounted on the mould wall.
3. Objective and part goals
a) Expeiments at ¿Försökshall¿
A very simple apparat will be used to study the effect of new inlet system (submerged incliend slot with jet killer ) on the fluid flow. The casting apparat without any oscillation and pulling system, for sake of simplicity, is going to be built and used at the Outokumpu R&D Västerås. The system includes a par of currently used (fulle scale) mould. The cooling effect will apply on both side of the mould, using water channel. In order to have a direct obsevation of fluid flow, a number of quartz window are going to be mounted at the position of the meniscus of molten copper on the narrow side of the mould.
A load of (lab. scale) experiments will be performed to analyse and modify the inlet system. The microstructure studies will also be performed to analyse the effect of different flow pattern on the casting quality.
