Talking Plants, Listening Insects

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
Plants sharing the same environment interact with each other, not just by competition but also by a process called 'Allelopathy'. This means the interaction of plants by chemicals, and is traditionally seen as a way that a plant can have negative effects on its neighbours.

Our research group at the Dept. Entomologi, SLU, Uppsala has shown that these allelopathic interactions also affect the insects that feed on the plants as well as their natural enemies. Our work involves exposing plants to allelopathy from other plants and then measuring the behavioural responses of insects to the exposed plants. We have shown that aphids (bladlös), are less attracted to exposed plants.

Next we need to study some more detailed responses, including how the aphids feed, grow and develop populations on allelopathy-exposed plants, as well as how a group of natural enemies (parasitic wasps) respond to allelopathy. These studies can be an interesting ex-jobb project.

This project will involve running a range of bioassays to test insect behavioral responses, and possibly some work on collecting and isolating the chemical signals released by allelopathic plants.

The project would suit someone with an interest in entomology, insect behaviour and ecology, biological control or sustainable pest management.

Please contact me, Robert Glinwood for further details.
