Instability of separated boundary-layer flows

Background:
The flow on an airfoil at moderate angles of attack often separates
from the surface and build a so called 'separation bubble'. The
reattachment of the flow can be either laminar or turbulent depending
on the Reynolds number and disturbance level. The size of the
separated zone and the character of the reattached flow has great
impacts on the aerodynamic properties, as lift and drag, of the
aircraft. Thus, ability to correct prediction of the separation
bubbles and their stability is an important issue for design of airfoils.
Project:
In this project we intend to analyse the instability of laminar
separated boundary layer flows using using different theories. The
flow is calculated using two different codes. The first one,
which is a fast method, is based on the so called 'interactive
boundary layer method'. The accuracy of these results is checked by
comparison with those obtained from a high-order Navier-Stokes solver.

at the Aeronautics Division FFA in Bromma. The duration of each project is
approximately five months.
