My laboratory in the newly renovated Children´s Hospital Oakland Research Institute is interested in understanding how cellular protein synthesis and cancer are connected. Our work is focused on the protein synthesis initiation factor 5A (eIF5A). This small (18kDa) protein stimulates ribosomal function and possibly other mRNA-metabolic events. It uniquely carries the post-translational modification hypusine. Both eIF5A and hypusine and its relatives are found in all living organisms and are essential for life. A long term goal is to develop new anticancer drugs. This project focuses on the enzymes (DHS and DHH) that activate eIF5A and how they are regulated through the cell cycle.
