Ericsson Research in Linköping has developed a radio system simulator that is used to study mobile communication systems such as 3G, and 3G Long Term Evolution (LTE). The simulator is written in the Java language and models many details, including the various protocol layers, applications, multiple users and base stations, mobility, propagation models, etc. The simulator can be run both from the command line and using a graphical user interface.

The simulations place high demands on the computing environment, since it is often necessary to study large systems with many base stations and many users, running over reasonably long periods of simulated time. Memory requirements and execution time are often bottlenecks. The code is written in Java 1.5, using relatively new features such as generics and annotations. Development is done in the Eclipse IDE. Profiling tools are available.

The master thesis project concerns optimization and evaluation of the simulator performance from a memory and execution time perspective. Some proposals for optimization exists, but the student is welcome to propose new optimizations. One particular challenge is to efficiently utilize multi-core architectures.
